Most Water Filters Are Certified for Taste — Not Health
A certification seal doesn’t mean a filter removes anything harmful. Of 5,682 certified filters, 43% carry only NSF/ANSI 42 — an aesthetic standard for taste and odor — with no health-contaminant certification.

- NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetics (chlorine taste, odor); NSF/ANSI 53 covers health contaminants (lead, PFAS, and more).
- “NSF Certified” alone tells you almost nothing — you have to check which standard and which contaminant.
- Only 757 filters are certified for lead; about 76 for PFAS.
What this means, in plain English
It’s easy to assume any “certified” water filter cleans your water. It doesn’t work that way. The certification tells you exactly one thing: which test the filter passed. The most common one, NSF/ANSI 42, is about taste and smell — mainly removing the chlorine taste. It says nothing about lead, PFAS, arsenic, or any health contaminant. The standard that covers those is NSF/ANSI 53, and far fewer filters carry it. So a filter can be genuinely “NSF certified” and still not remove a single harmful thing. What matters is the standard number and the specific contaminant it’s certified for.

Before buying, check two things: the standard number (you want NSF/ANSI 53, 58, or 401 for health — not just 42) and the specific contaminant it’s certified to remove. Our filter and contaminant pages show exactly what each model is certified for.
What each certification actually covers
A certification tells you which test a filter passed — nothing more. NSF 42 is about taste; the health standards are 53, 58, and 401.

Terms, explained
- NSF/ANSI 42
- An aesthetic certification: it covers taste, odor, and chlorine. It does not certify removal of health contaminants.
- NSF/ANSI 53
- A health certification: it covers contaminants with health effects, like lead, certain VOCs, and (for some filters) PFAS. This is the one to look for.
- NSF/ANSI 58
- The certification for reverse-osmosis systems, covering contaminants like arsenic, fluoride, and PFAS.
- NSF/ANSI 401
- Covers “emerging contaminants” — trace pharmaceuticals and chemicals like pesticides.
- Certified vs. “tested to”
- “Certified” means an independent body verified and lists the exact model. “Tested to NSF standards” is a marketing phrase that means no such thing.

Important caveat: A filter can hold several certifications at once. 'Only aesthetic' means it carries NSF/ANSI 42 but no health-contaminant standard (53/58/401/etc.). Some effective filters are certified by WQA or IAPMO to the same standards.
