    We found 16 copy listings certified for lead and 31 certified for taste and odor only across the 11 filters above. A copy only counts as certified when the certifier lists its exact model code.

    How to find your filter number

    1. Read the old filter. Take it out and look at the label. The part number is printed there, such as LT1000P, XWFE or EDR1RXD1.
    2. No filter in hand? Find your fridge's model number. It is on a sticker inside the fridge, usually on a side wall or the ceiling of the fresh-food section. Enter it on the maker's site to see the filter.
    3. Check for a chip. Some newer GE fridges read a sensor in the filter (GE XWFE). Those fridges need a filter with that sensor.

    The one thing to check before you buy a copy

    Most copies come from a few factories. The same factory often sells one filter in two or three versions that look the same. One is certified for taste and odor only. Another is also certified for lead and cysts. Only the model code tells them apart.

    For example, NSF lists Waterdrop's WD-F46 (an LT1000P copy) for taste and odor only, and Waterdrop Plus WDP-F46 for lead, cysts and traces of medicines. Find the code in the Amazon listing's details, then match it to the certifier's listing. We did that for every filter on this page.

    Questions people ask

    How do I know which refrigerator water filter I need?

    Pull out your old filter and read the part number on its label, such as LT1000P or XWFE. If you cannot get to the filter, find the fridge model number on the sticker inside the fridge, usually on a side wall or the ceiling, and look it up on the maker's site.

    Are cheaper refrigerator water filters safe?

    Some are certified to the same standards as the brand filter and some are not. Many popular copies are certified only for taste and odor (NSF/ANSI 42), which means they were not tested for lead or cysts. Check that the exact model code is listed by NSF, IAPMO or WQA for NSF/ANSI 53.

    What does NSF/ANSI 53 mean on a fridge filter?

    It is the health standard. A filter certified to NSF/ANSI 53 was tested to reduce the specific health contaminants on its listing, such as lead and cysts, for its full rated gallons. NSF/ANSI 42 covers only chlorine, taste and odor.

    How often should I change my fridge water filter?

    Most makers say every 6 months, or sooner if you pass the rated gallons. The claim on a certification only holds for those gallons.
