Pitchers sold as “PFAS” filters that are not certified for it

A lab test paid for by the brand is not a certification. Certification means a certifier tested the exact model, lists it in public, and checks the factory. Here is what each brand says, and what its listing shows.

What “certified for PFAS” means here

PFOA and PFOS are the two PFAS that NSF/ANSI 53 has tested the longest. To pass, a filter must take water spiked with 1.5 parts per billion of PFOA and PFOS combined and bring it down to 0.07 parts per billion (70 parts per trillion) or less, for its full rated gallons. Those test levels are printed on Brita’s 2023 Elite data sheet.

Total PFAS is a newer NSF/ANSI 53 claim. PUR PLUS and Culligan ZeroWater carry it. It is meant to cover more PFAS than PFOA and PFOS alone. We did not read the test protocol, so we do not list which compounds it covers.

Rated gallons matter. The claim only holds for the gallons on the listing. ZeroWater’s original filter is rated for 15 gallons, Culligan ZeroWater for 20, PUR PLUS for 40, and Patriot Pure for 200. Change the filter on time, or the claim no longer applies.

Check your own water first. Our ZIP code lookup shows the PFAS your water system reported to EPA. If PFAS levels are high, an under-sink filter or reverse osmosis system treats more water for less money per gallon.

Who should buy which

  • Most people: PUR PLUS. Certified for Total PFAS and the cheapest to run at $0.23 per gallon. Pitcher ($28.12) · filters ($27.54 for 3)
  • You also want fluoride or nitrate lower: Culligan ZeroWater. Its listing adds fluoride and nitrate/nitrite, at $0.72 per gallon. · filters ($57.99 for 4)
  • You already own a ZeroWater pitcher: keep using official ZR-017 filters. They are certified for PFOA and PFOS, at $0.79 per gallon. Filters ($23.67 for 2)
  • You want a big countertop tank: Patriot Pure Ultimate. Certified for PFOA and PFOS by NSF, with filters rated for 200 gallons ($0.33 per gallon). The unit costs $249.00. Amazon
  • You own a Brita: no Brita pitcher filter is certified for PFAS. See does Brita remove PFAS, filter by filter.

Faucet filters are another option: IAPMO also lists PUR faucet filters RF-3375 and RF-9999 for Total PFAS (W-29904), and WQA lists the ZeroWater faucet filter ZFM-400 for PFOA and PFOS.

Questions people ask

Does ZeroWater remove PFAS?

Yes. IAPMO lists the original ZeroWater pitchers, such as the ZP-010, for PFOA and PFOS reduction under NSF/ANSI 53 (certificate W-14820), with each filter rated for 15 gallons. The newer Culligan ZeroWater pitchers, such as the ZEROP10, are listed for Total PFAS (certificate W-17155), rated for 20 gallons.

Does PUR remove PFAS?

Yes, with the PUR PLUS filter. IAPMO lists PUR PLUS pitchers with the PPF951K filter for Total PFAS under NSF/ANSI 53 (certificate W-29904), rated for 40 gallons. The same pitchers with the basic PPF900Z filter are not certified for PFAS.

Does Brita remove PFAS?

Not in a pitcher. No Brita pitcher, faucet or Hub filter is certified for PFAS on the NSF, WQA or IAPMO listings checked October 7, 2026. The only Brita product certified for PFAS is the Brita Under Sink system (BUSS01), for PFOA and PFOS.

What is the best PFAS water filter pitcher?

Our pick is PUR PLUS. It is certified for Total PFAS (IAPMO W-29904), and each filter is rated for 40 gallons, more than the ZeroWater filters (20 and 15). Pick Culligan ZeroWater if you also want fluoride and nitrate reduction.

  • We checked: each listing’s model numbers, filter, rated gallons and claims, and that each Amazon link goes to the listed model or filter.
  • We did not check: how well any filter works in your water. We did not test filters ourselves. We did not search every pitcher brand sold in the US; we checked the 10 above. We found no NSF, WQA or IAPMO listing for Epic or Aquagear pitchers under those brand names; a listing under a different company name is possible. Culligan also sells MaxClear gravity units listed for Total PFAS (IAPMO W-17177); we did not match its Amazon model numbers to the listing, so it is not in the table.
